A paper authored by Ph.D. student Jiarong Xing, was accepted at USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Cloud Computing (HotCloud ’19).

The co-authors of the paper are assistant professor of computer science Ang Chen and Adam Morrison (CS ’19).

“NetWarden: Mitigating Network Covert Channels without Performance Loss” is the title of the paper. In the paper, Xing, who recently finished his first year at Rice, designs a novel defense against network covert channels.

The motivation of his work is to defend against data exfiltration attacks, such as the Equifax data breach in 2017 and a similarly disastrous attack to Capital One in 2019, which leaked secret data of millions of individuals.

“It’s a fun project!" Chen said. "Jiarong has been very dedicated in his work, and I’m very happy to see his hard work pay off. This is just one instance of all the cool stuff Jiarong has been working on. I am sure he will do great things in the years to come,” he said.

Xing said the conference gave him a clear picture of the state-of-the-art techniques used in cloud computing.

“Because of my talk, I introduced myself and my research to the attendees. It is helpful for other people to know me and my research so we can collaborate in the future,” he said.

HotCloud’19 took place July 8 in Renton, Wash.
