Christopher Jermaine, professor of computer science, has been awarded a three-year $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to investigate distributed learning computations.
“While there is a lot of interest in coming up with new models and algorithms for machine learning, there is relatively little foundational work asking how to build machine learning systems that make it possible to learn huge models using many machines,” Jermaine said.
The proposal, “III: Small: Declarative Recursive Computation on a Database System” focuses on addressing deficiencies in machine learning to non-standard cases by applying ideas from relational database systems to the design and implementation of systems for machine learning.
“Currently, it is difficult for mere mortals to get machine learning systems to work well outside of the 'vanilla’ case of learning on top of a single machine. We plan to change that,” he said.
