Postdoctoral Research Associate Xian Fan was selected to be part of Rising Stars 2019. Rising Stars is an academic career workshop for women in EECS. Fan said she felt honored with the selection.

“I am very thankful to my advisor Luay Nakhleh, who always supports, is always kind, and always puts his students and postdocs first,” she said.

Fan’s research is on bioinformatics and computational cancer biology. She hopes to connect and collaborate with other women researchers as a result of the workshop.

“I will see how I can contribute as a female to this research area, as the percentage of female scientists in EECS is relatively low,” she said.

The workshop is designed to be an intensive experience for women in graduate studies and postdocs who are interested in pursuing academic careers in computer science, computer engineering and electrical engineering. Last year, the event drew 76 women for research presentations, poster sessions and conversations about academic careers. The event will be hosted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
